Need a Charger/Leave a Charger

The Need a Charger/Leave a Charger Project was developed to cut down on the amount of local waste generated through chargers. Based in Newburyport, Massachusetts, it focuses on collecting and offering commonly used chargers for phones, tablets, and laptops.

What is Need A Charger/Leave A Charger?

The Need a Charger/Leave a Charger Project was developed to cut down on the amount of local waste generated through chargers. It focuses on collecting and offering commonly used chargers for free, including USB tips (A, B, C, mini and micro), lightning chargers, and more.

Where does this take place?

Charger drop off/pick up will take place at the Newburyport Recycling Center (Colby Farm Lane) on the monthly First Saturday events.

When does this take place?

Need a Charger/Leave a Charger will begin on Saturday October 3rd from 8:00am to 11:55am. It will continue on the first Saturday of every month, weather permitting (sometimes on the second Saturday of the month if in conflict with a holiday).

Why does this project exist?

Planned obsolescence and a drop in prices have caused the amount of electronic waste produced (e-waste) to grow rapidly. Less than 20% of this e-waste is recycled (UN Report). Everything else is dumped in either landfills (where toxic chemicals can run off and end up contaminating the water supply) or incinerators (which pollute the air). Much of the recycled e-waste is exported to developing countries which poses human health problems, such as exposure to hazardous materials.

Often with broken electronics, the accompanying chargers will still work. Reusing chargers is superior to recycling them because it cuts down on hazardous waste and energy used to manufacture new ones. Many people have working chargers that they no longer use, so donating them instead of throwing them out can help someone out and help the environment.

How does it work?

-Recycling Center staff have set up labeled bins where you can drop off any unused chargers and pick up ones you might find useful. -Chargers will be available at the monthly First Saturday event for pickup
-Bring chargers neatly wrapped and organized. Ideally, wrap the chargers around toilet paper tubes to keep the bins organized.
-Take a maximum of two of each type of charger per household per month.
-All chargers that are presented to the staff as working will be accepted and placed in the bin.
-We have many laptop chargers available for pickup. If you would like a laptop charger, we recommend that you bring your laptop or current charger so you can make sure you take home the correct tip.

NOTE: Chargers can at times involve substantial risk of injury and property damage. The Newburyport Recycling Center and the City of Newburyport cannot guarantee the functionality of each charger, thus, they assume no responsibility for the chargers.
