Where: Newburyport Recycling Center, Colby Farm Lane (straight across Low Street from North Atkinson Street)

Why: to divert still-useful household construction materials and furniture from the waste stream while benefiting others.

FAQ:

  • What COVID protocols will you have in place?
    • No mask, No service – even in your vehicle if your window is down.
    • All volunteers will be masked.
    • All items must be accessible from trunk. We cannot have volunteers emptying items from backseats.
    • Ideally, no need for residents to exit vehicle.
  • Can I get a tax credit receipt?
    • Advice – take photos of your item(s) as you load your vehicle at home for verification. Volunteers onsite will NOT be able to assist or provide valuation.
    • There will be someone onsite to confirm your donation and an email receipt will be sent within a few days after the event.
  • What if Habitat doesn’t want my stuff?
    • Check out other charitable organizations who might take your item(s). NOTE: the Habitat ReStore listed below is a separate entity from the one we are hosting and may take additional items.

    • Offer on Freecycle or Facebook’s Marketplace or Newburyport Curb Alert on Facebook or NextDoor or other peer-to-peer social media (we can help with this – email TowardZeroWasteNewburyport@outlook.com for assistance!)
    • Take to Mello transfer stations in Georgetown or Newbury –  please contact Mello directly for pricing information.
    • If furniture (NOT building materials), Newburyport residents can buy a bulk sticker online (takes about a week to arrive) then put out with curbside trash. Building materials must be taken to a transfer station and cannot be left out with trash (even with a bulk sticker.)
  • What if I want something – can I come shop?
    • NO! Anything that comes to this pilot event either goes in the Habitat truck or leaves the Recycling Center with the owner. If you have something you want or would like someone to pick up, please solicit/advertise on social media before the event.  Also – Shop Habitat ReStore locations!
  • I have a bunch of electronics/scrap metal/cardboard/other-stuff-we-drop-off-at-the-recycling-center – can I bring that?
    • NO! This is NOT a First Saturday or scheduled drop off. We will NOT be accepting ANYTHING but those items intended for Habitat. The next drop off date for these items will be in two weeks, on 7 November from 8am – 12noon.
  • What happens if I get there before 12noon but the truck is full?
    • Unfortunately, you will most likely have to go home with your donation. This is a pilot project to see if there is demand, if it is worthwhile for the charity, and how we can do this efficiently. You will have the option to:
      • Have your donation evaluated to be sure it is something Habitat will like
        • Take home and wait for next pick up
        • Take directly to one of the Habitat ReStore locations to donate
        • See if it is something Habitat would schedule for pick up
      • See What if Habitat doesn’t want my stuff? above for other options should Habitat not want your items.
  • What if I am a contractor?
    • This event is for residents only but we are very happy to help you connect with Habitat for a separate drop off or pick up!
  • What if I have something to big or heavy for my car?
    • You can contact Habitat directly, via email at info@mvrestore.org, with your name, address, description and image files of your item(s) to see if they are interested and can arrange pick up. NOTE:
      • They are only doing contactless curbside pickup and cannot enter homes. Items must be outside or in an open garage.
      • They are usually scheduling 2-3 weeks out. Your items will not be picked up on 24 October.

This is a pilot event, 100% volunteer run. Constructive comments for improvements are welcome after the event via email.
